As the U.S. midterm elections approach, recent revelations about Twitter's security are raising concerns about the social media platform's potential influence on voters. The panel also explores how the decision by the U.S. Department of Justice to file its most sensitive court documents on paper may affect other governmental agencies and the implications of the recent move by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control to sanction virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash.

Anna Delaney, director, productions; Tom Field, senior vice president, editorial; Ari Redbord, head of legal and government affairs, TRM Labs; and Grant Schneider, senior director for cybersecurity services, Venable LLP, discuss:

  • Recent allegations by a whistleblower about lax security and privacy practices at Twitter and how they could affect election outcomes;
  • The U.S. Justice Department's decision to file its most sensitive court documents on paper to avoid any chance of a breach in electronic filing systems - and whether other agencies will follow suit;
  • The impact of federal sanctions against Tornado Cash on the decentralized finance industry.

Prior to joining Venable, Schneider served as the U.S. federal CISO, deputy federal CISO and senior director for cybersecurity policy on the White House National Security Council. He previously served for seven years as chief information officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Prior to joining TRM, Redbord was senior adviser to the deputy secretary and the undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

"Proof of Concept" runs semimonthly. Don't miss our previous installments, including the July 18 edition on a new era for digital identity and the Aug. 3 edition on China's threat to national security.
