Profiles in Leadership: Michael D'Ambrosio
Ex-Secret Service Leader on How Private Sector, Law Enforcement Can Work TogetherOrganizations often lack sufficient visibility into their network and assets to fully understand their threat and risk exposure, said Liberty Strategic Capital Managing Director Michael D'Ambrosio.

The increasing number of employees accessing corporate networks from remote locations around the world has made it difficult for businesses to fully wrap their arms around what's on their network and where threats are coming from, D'Ambrosio said. He has brought the private sector and law enforcement together via tabletop exercises that help people understand what a cyber incident looks like from the other perspective (see: US Secret Service Forms Cyber Fraud Task Force).
"I advocate for a more community-oriented policing model in cybersecurity in which the private sector, law enforcement and academia are all interconnected and working together to impose cost and consequence on our adversaries," D'Ambrosio said. "I found it really was more people's perceptions than reality as to what was keeping the two sides apart."
In this interview with Information Security Media Group as part of the CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, D'Ambrosio also discusses:
- How to effectively keep up with changes in the threat landscape;
- How his background in law enforcement informs investment decisions;
- Best practices for someone becoming a CISO for the first time.
D'Ambrosio focuses primarily on the cybersecurity sector and other investment opportunities with a security dimension. Prior to joining Liberty, he was the senior executive leading all 162 field offices of the Secret Service, which fights cybercrime and protects the U.S. financial system. He was responsible for the administration and resourcing of a Cyber Task Force consisting of 40 electronic crime task forces and 46 financial crimes task forces.
