As a technology and security leader, Laura-Lea Berna is driven to defend gaps. But as a business executive, the VP, IT and CIO of BC Transit has built her career on answering the question "Where's the need?" She discusses her path and role as a mentor to up-and-coming leaders.

In an interview with Information Security Media Group as part of CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, Berna discusses:

Berna joined BC Transit in October 2018, and is currently the Vice President, Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. Prior to joining BC Transit, she was the CIO for Camosun College for four years. Laura-Lea also served as the VP of Operations and VP of Product Management at AbeBooks, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, for eight years.

Although not formally trained in technology, almost 20 years in the field has taught her a lot. By combining business acumen with technology, she self-identifies as an example of “the new breed of CIO”, promoting IT as the trusted partner and advisor of the business.
