The Need to Embed AI in Cybersecurity Frameworks

Cisco's Jeetu Patel on Industrywide Collaboration to Boost AI Defenses

Integrating generative AI into cybersecurity strategies is a pivotal shift in how organizations safeguard their assets. If AI is not embedded within cybersecurity frameworks, the adversaries will be far ahead, said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager, security and collaboration, Cisco.

"In the short term, people overestimate its impact. And in the long term, they grossly underestimate its impact," Patel said. He stressed that while our daily lives haven't been drastically altered by AI in the past few months, the landscape over the next decade will transform significantly, necessitating advanced defenses now.

"If we don't have AI built natively in the defenses, we're going to have the adversary take the advantage," he said.

"This is the first time that I think I see a light at the end of the tunnel where the defender might have an advantage, largely because of data and the architecture that we go out and implement," Patel said. "Security needs a new architecture, but the data advantage that we can provide with AI to the defenders and to our defenses is going to be material, and they'll have a compounding value."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2024, Patel also discussed:

  • Proactively integrating AI into cybersecurity strategies;
  • The challenges security practitioners face due to widespread adoption of AI tools;
  • Cisco's commitment to investing in AI.

Patel, who has led Cisco's security and collaboration business units since August 2020, previously spent more than five years leading Box's product and platform strategy, setting the company's long-term vision and road map for cloud content management in the enterprise.
