Immutable backups are essential in the fight against ransomware, and businesses should put protections in place to ensure attackers can't alter or delete them.

Acronis President Gaidar Magdanurov said data protection firms must address the threat of ransomware by implementing immutable storage and exposing APIs for seamless integration with security tools. This ensures backups can be part of an automated response system during attacks, and integrating security and backup systems reduces downtime and ensures systems can be quickly restored after an attack (see: Acronis CEO on Why Service Providers Must Host Data Locally).

"Backup is not only a tool for recovery but also for investigation," Magdanurov said. "It's important to use tools that allow creating copies of data and memory dumps for forensics analysis because if you had an incident, you want to know what actually happened."

In this audio interview with Information Security Media Group, Magdanurov also discussed:

  • The role of immutable backups in guarding against ransomware;
  • The importance of integrating security and backup systems;
  • How automated recovery minimizes downtime post-attack.

Magdanurov is responsible for Acronis' partner enablement, education and marketing organizations. Previously, as an investment director at venture capital fund Runa Capital, he was responsible for seed-stage investments and advising and educating entrepreneurs. Before that, Magdanurov served in various roles at Microsoft, from a technology evangelist to a Microsoft seed fund managing director.
