How Micro-Segmentation Can Help Stop Breaches From Spreading

Illumio's Mukesh Gupta on Improving Network Virtualization Security

Hackers are going to breach a network, bypassing firewalls and other network defenses. So the focus must be on what happens next, says Mukesh Gupta of Illumio.

"For the last two to three decades, what we're realizing is that after spending billions of dollars on these perimeter technologies, we still can't figure out how to stop the attackers from coming into these data centers," he says. "So now what people are realizing is that we can't prevent them from coming in, but what we can do is ... compartmentalize them and contain them in a corner. And that's really what s driving micro-segmentation."

In a video interview at RSA Conference 2018, Gupta discusses:

  • What's driving the increased use of micro-segmentation;
  • Compliance challenges and the push for segmentation by organizations such as SWIFT;
  • How micro-segmentation can help stop hackers' lateral movement once they breach a network.

Gupta is the senior director for product management at Illumio. Previously, he served as the working group chair of the IETF's Virtual Router Redundancy Protocoll; CEO of LocalCircles; senior product line manager for Juniper's enterprise branch security, routing, and switching product lines; and senior software engineer for Nokia.
